Top Eurocrat supports NZ's climate strategy

Europe’s top climate negotiator said last week an informal group including New Zealand, China, and some US states is “going to set international standards” on dealing with fossil carbon dioxide emissions.

During an May 2 interview in Bonn, Germany, Artur Runge-Metzger said the 1997 Kyoto Protocol was "something that ended up in a kind of cul-de-sac."

Local commentators fretted New Zealand's withdrawal from Kyoto Protocol could damage our international brand. That was a possibility. Kyoto was always a lemon. But many people around the world didn't know that.

Pulling out was a risk. But if public opinion follows scientific reality, the risk will be worth it. New Zealand will be seen as an international leader on climate policy.

That should be good for brand New Zealand and Technology Valley.
