So many stories...

Finally, after what seems like forever, I can brag about some of the fantastic stories I've been working on. Not all of them, mind you, just the ones you can read this month.

I have two stories in the July/August edition of Engineering Insight magazine. The first is about a charitable foundation helping talented but "disadvantaged" young people successfully transition from high school to university. Which is fantastic, because another story in the same issue points out a serious weakness undermining innovation in New Zealand. We are not producing anywhere near enough qualified engineers and technicians. My story (page 29) profiles a scheme that might make a difference.

I'm even more excited about "Engineering A Cup Boat," which appears on page 6 of the same magazine. Interviewing Team New Zealand engineering boss Nick Holroyd has been the highlight of 2014 (so far :). We heard at the last Meetup how America's Cup programmes channel bleeding-edge technology into ordinary niche market innovators. Listening to Nick Holroyd, I got some insight into the front end of that conduit. To have any chance at all of winning, America's Cup teams have to expand the frontiers of the possible. And they have to work within budgets that are far more restrictive that anything in the military or aerospace businesses. My story surveys the work that went into Emirates Team New Zealand's AC72 campaign. OK, so they didn't win. But Oracle had Russel Coutts leading the charge, and their boat was driven by the cheekiest smart-arse to come out of Australia in decades. No shame coming second to a team like that. In fact, if you pick up a copy of Engineering Insight and read my article, you'll be reminded that Team New Zealand's contribution was critical to the popular success of the 2013 America's Cup.

There are plenty more great stories in the pipeline. While you're waiting, pick up a copy of the July/August Engineering Insight.
